Stendhal (1783 1842) veröffentlichte die Novelle "Vanina Vanini" 1829. Erzählt wird die Geschichte einer unstatthaften Liebe: Die römischen Principessa Vanina Vanini verliebt sich in einen jungen Revolutionär. Als dieser inhaftiert und zum Tode verurteilt wird, versucht Vanina, ihren Geliebten durch eine Heirat vor der Hinrichtung zu retten. Daneben enthält der Band noch die Novelle "Die Fürstin von Campobasso". Stendhal schrieb beide Texte zur selben Zeit, als er an seinem berühmten Roman "Rot und Schwarz" arbeitete.
