Den "Jedermann"-Stoff, der das Thema von der Hinfälligkeit der irdischen Besitztümer und der Heilsnotwendigkeit der Buße mit der Parabel vom Freund in der Not verbindet, fand Hofmannsthal (1874-1929) in einer englischen Schauspielbearbeitung. Auch eine dramatische Gestaltung aus dem 12. Jahrhundert ist überliefert. Hofmannsthal benutzte die mittelalterlichen und barocken Vorstellungen vom Wandel der Menschen miteinander und vor Gottes Angesicht, um die Grundfrage nach dem Sinn des menschlichen Auftrages in der Welt zu stellen. Uraufgeführt 1911 in Berlin unter der Regie von Max Reinhardt wurde dieses Stück vor allem durch die Salzburger Festspiele, in deren Programm es einen festen Platz hat, berühmt.§
