Karl Heinz Bohrer beschäftigt sich in seinem großen Buch nicht bloß eindringlich-provokant mit den verschiedenen Formen des Abschieds. Vielmehr gilt sein theoretisches Interesse dem Abschied als Strukturgesetz. Seine Analyse weist nach, dass sich seit 1800 ein poetischer Diskurs herausbildet, in dem Abschied eine radikal neue, jede Form von Trost zurückweisende Gestalt annimmt, die im Werk von Charles Baudelaire kulminiert. Die moderne Trauer, die Baudelaires Werk prägt, weiß, dass die Gegenwart gar nicht mehr erfahrbar, dass sie stets schon entschwunden ist. Indem die Reflexionsfigur des je schon Gewesenen eine Aufhebung des literarischen Diskurses bedeutet, erkundet die Theorie der Trauer die Grenzen des Erfahrbaren.
