Kinder- und Jugendliteratur (KJL) ist und bleibt ein Stiefkind der Literaturwissenschaft, obwohl sie ca. 15 Prozent der Buchproduktion ausmacht und für die Entwicklung der Kinder und Jugendlichen und damit auch der ganzen Gesellschaft eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Die Autorin zeigt den Wandel und die Konjunktur der Fantastischen Kinderliteratur seit den siebziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts und setzt sie mit gegenwärtigen Phänomenen wie Ortspolygamie, Pluralität, Orientierungslosigkeit, Migration, Brüchigkeit von Identitäten in Verbindung. Mit der Frage nach Raumkonzepten in der jüngsten deutschsprachigen KJL wird an einen in den vergangenen Jahren in den Kulturwissenschaften besonders wichtig gewordenen theoretischen Referenzrahmen angeschlossen. In weiterer Folge werden Analyse- und Interpretationswerkzeuge in Auseinandersetzung mit Begriffen des Raums, des Spiels und der Postmoderne geschärft, anschließend wird die Konzeptualisierung von Parallelwelten in gegenwärtigen Texten und im Kontext der gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen dargestellt. An einem für die KJL der vergangenen Jahrzehnte zentralen Beispiel Michael Endes Die unendliche Geschichte wird das Verfahren der Konstruktion einer Parallelwelt noch einmal detailliert vorgeführt.
