Introduction to Network Security - Theory and Practice

This is an update of the now out-of-print Computer Network Security: Theory and Practice, authored by Jie Wang, which was published jointly by Higher Education Press and Springer in 2008. The updated material expands the first edition to cover developments since its completion in 2008. This book aims to fulfil the requirements on network security in the cyber security curriculum for higher-level undergraduate and first-year graduate students.§§This edition explores the state of the art in computer network security, looking at both theory and practice. This provides students with a solid base on which to build critical thinking skills required by network security. As the field of network security evolves the problems occur not only in the home or business network setting but also in the realms of cloud and utility computing. Cloud security is a burgeoning field whose security concerns are not yet fully understood. This book includes a treatment of this new and exciting area. The first chapter overviews the network security in general and names a range of security threats to motivate readers. Then the book proceeds with three chapters on security essentials: data encryption, public key cryptography, and authentication. After introducing these fundamental concepts, the authors focus on network security details, in particular, in-network protocols and network perimeter defenses. The last two chapters talk about cloud security and anti-malicious software, which are recent hot topics in both industry and academia.
