Als 1951 die Trierer Straßenbahn zu den Klängen von Chopins Trauermarsch ihre letzte Fahrt antrat, säumten Hunderte Trierer die Strecke, um wehmütig Abschied von ihrer "Elektrischen" zu nehmen. 46 Jahre lang hatte sie auf vier Linien die Trierer durch die Innenstadt befördert, bevor die letzten Streckenabschnitte in Folge größerer Kriegsschäden stillgelegt werden mussten. Zuvor bediente über knapp 15 Jahre eine Pferdebahn zwei kürzere Strecken. Der renommierte Archäologe und Historiker Karl-Josef Gilles, Autor der beiden erfolgreichen Bildbände "Entlang der Mosel" und "Das Moseltal zwischen Koblenz und Trier", stellt hier zusammen mit seinem Sohn Joachim Gilles, Student der Geschichte und Politik, die wechselhafte Geschichte der Trierer Straßenbahnen dar. Neben zahlreichen unveröffentlichten Fotos, weitgehend aus der eigenen Sammlung, bieten die Autoren einen historischen Abriss sowie eine Beschreibung der einzelnen Linien und des Fahrzeugparks. Nicht nur Technik-Begeisterte kommen dabei auf ihre Kosten. Dieser Bildband lädt ein zu einer Fahrt mit der Trierer Tram vor allem in die Zwanziger- und Dreißigerjahre des letzten Jahrhunderts. Die Bilder lassen nicht nur Nostalgiker erahnen, welch reizvolles Transportmittel der Moselmetropole verloren gegangen ist.
