Diese vier Motetten komponierte Copland im Herbst 1921 während er bei Nadia Boulanger in Paris studierte und waren lange Zeit unveröffentlicht. In einem Brief an Copland schrieb Nadia Boulanger 1924, das "diese Motetten in den Stimmen in einer überwältigenden Art klingen." These four motets were composed in the fall of 1921 while Copland was studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. The four motets have remained unpublished until now.
