Hideko Takamine and Masayuki Mori star in this Japanese drama directed by Mikio Naruse. Returning to Tokyo after World War II, Yukiko (Takamine) reunites with Tomioka (Mori), the married engineer with whom she previously had an affair. They resume their relationship but when Tomioka refuses to leave his wife, Yukiko becomes the mistress of an American soldier as a way of surviving the economic devastation brought about by the war. As Tomioka embarks on another affair with another younger woman, Yukiko still cannot cut him out of her life, even if it means her eventual ruin.
