Frankreich 1944: Bei den deutschen Besetzern herrscht nervöse Spannung: Die Division "Das Reich" soll in die Normandie rücken. Das Verhalten der Miliz wird immer bedrohlicher. Julien (Philippe Noiret) entschließt sich deshalb, seine Frau (Romy Schneider) und Tochter sicherheitshalber in einem Schloss unterzubringen, damit diese dort das zweifellos nahe Ende des Krieges sicher abwarten können. Als er nach einiger Zeit dorthin zurückkehrtt, findet er die verstümmelten Leichen seiner Frau und Tochter vor. Besinnungslos vor Schmerz stürzt er ins Schloss und holt aus einem Versteck ein altes Jagdgewehr, um die Mörder seiner Familie zur Strecke zu bringen.
