Das 1170 erstmals erwähnte Oedt gehörte zunächst zur Abtei Mönchengladbach. Die bei Oedt liegende Burgruine Uda diente im 14. Jahrhundert als Verwaltungszentrum der damals eigenständigen Landesherrschaft. Durch den 1349 erfolgten Weiterverkauf an den Erzbischof von Köln kam Oedt an Kurköln. Die nun kurkölnische Landesburg erlangte bis zum 17. Jahrhundert ihre Bedeutung als Grenzfestung gegen die Herzogtümer Geldern und Jülich. Das die Ortsentwicklung bestimmende siedlungsgeschichtliche Element des 19. Jahrhunderts bildete die 1879 gegründete Textilfirma Girmes, welche die Industrialisierung und Urbanisierung stark vorantrieb.
