Water Flows Uphill

The people of Hong Kong have long suffered from drought and water shortages, especially the severe drought in 1963, during which Hong Kong supplied water to citizens every four days. The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and the Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Trade Unions jointly appealed to the Guangdong Provincial People's Government for help. The Guangdong Provincial Government immediately responded and supplied 20,000 tons of water to Hong Kong free of charge every day. At the same time, the Guangdong Provincial Government reported this situation to the central government. At the end of 1963, to ensure the survival and development of Hong Kong compatriots, under the care of Premier Zhou Enlai, the mainland, which had not fully emerged from the three-year difficulties, initiated the plan to build facilities such as the Shenzhen Reservoir and further construct the "e;Dongjiang-Shenzhen Water Supply Project"e; (abbreviated as "e;Dongshen Water Supply Project"e;), and conducted multiple expansions, renovations, and supporting water quality assurance projects for the Dongshen Water Supply Project, thereby completely solving the water shortage problem in Hong Kong and systematically improving the water conditions for the people's production and life in Dongguan, Shenzhen, and other places along the project.
