Most of Faulkner's novels have a sharply tragic tone because they largely blend tragedy and comedy. His sense of humor was a legacy of Mark Twain and other earlier writers, as Twain had a direct influence on Faulkner. Faulkner's short stories share the characteristics of his novels in terms of style, theme, and tone. Faulkner had a significant influence on novelists worldwide, as acknowledged by prominent contemporary writers such as the American novelist Toni Morrison, winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature. Morrison graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C., after submitting her thesis, "e;Suicide in the Novels of William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf,"e; focusing on Faulkner's novels "e;Jazz"e; and "e;Paradise."e;Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature, also acknowledged Faulkner's strong influence on him, saying: "e;If my novels are good, it is for one reason: I tried to surpass Faulkner in writing the impossible and presenting worlds and emotions that writing and words cannot convey like Faulkner's. But I could never surpass Faulkner, though I came close to him."e;Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa also said: "e;Faulkner's influence on my work is very great. Many of the world's writers have placed him among the greats of the twentieth century. He invented a universal system for the novel, created a good plot for the story, and brought excitement and anticipation into prose. Faulkner's worlds resemble the worlds of Latin America: a rural society with many feudal and ethnic elements. This similarity made many of us influenced by him. I discovered him when I was young. I was impressed by his skillful way of organizing the plot, the intertwined time, his way of generating events. There is no Latin American writer of my generation who was not directly influenced by Faulkner."e;
