Pawan Bhatia's Beyond the Prediction (2026) argues that asking "e;what happens next?"e; is the wrong starting point. Prediction—with dates, targets, and failure conditions—is fragile. Economies are reflexive: forecasts change behaviour. Complexity compounds uncertainty; black swans surprise; consensus herds; incentives reward boldness; hindsight confuses narrative with mechanism. Bhatia proposes trajectory thinking instead: directional, conditional, revisable, and plural. A trajectory identifies the system, direction, drivers, constraints, and signposts. It does not forecast prices but asks what forces make certain futures more likely.Part I explains why forecasts fail and distinguishes three habits: the speculator asks what will happen tomorrow; the investor asks what may become more valuable; the systems thinker asks what is changing underneath. Tools include stocks vs flows, cycles vs structures, cost curves, second-order effects, signal vs narrative, and inversion.Part II follows money. Money is a layered social technology—central bank money, commercial bank deposits, and state rules. Debt is both engine and anchor. Payment rails are being redesigned through instant payments, stablecoins, central bank digital currencies, and tokenisation. Bhatia explores who should create money, gold and commodities as memories of value, and three scenarios: a renovated house, a fragmented landscape, and a redesign.Part III examines cheap intelligence. If cognition becomes abundant, value flows to what remains scarce: proprietary data, distribution, physical assets, trust, regulation, networks, and complementary human skills. Chapters discuss who owns the machines, the energy and compute physical layer, labour and income, and a framework for where value goes. Outcomes depend on institutions, not technology alone.Part IV turns to markets: narrative versus structure, bubbles and what they leave behind, investing in structural change, humility as design, and the strongest case against trajectory thinking. Investors should separate view, vehicle, and price; lean rather than bet; seek robustness; avoid ruinous leverage; keep liquidity; and use pre-mortems and journals.Part V asks about society: the next social contract, institutions for a different era, ethics of ownership, and a daily systems practice. Bhatia suggests shared ownership, security, investment in human capabilities, competition, resilience, intergenerational fairness, and dignity. The epilogue says the material could form three books—changing how people think, invest, or redesign the world—but this one prioritises thinking. Appendices offer a trajectory worksheet, debate questions, glossary, and reading list. The core claim: certainty is unavailable, but orientation is possible. Understanding direction, holding views lightly, and preparing for error is more valuable than predicting the next event.
