For the past twenty-five years, national leading expert, Dr Alan Massey, has examined in detail the intriguing contents of more than a dozen "witch bottles" using spectroscopic techniques, X-ray diffraction and the scanning electron microscope. The reader is treated to a veritable feast of his photographs and spectra used to support his positive statements about the often very odd contents of these unusual "witch bottles".
So meticulous is his research that even the contents of two microscopic holes were explored: one in the rust of a small nail and the other where a hair louse had lost a leg. In another case, even the soil grains were counted.
