Good therapeutic questions are not just a matter of wording. Timing, tone and the client's readiness matter as much as what is actually asked, and the wrong question at the wrong moment can do more harm than staying quiet. This book is a working reference for counsellors who want fast, reliable access to well-considered questions for the situations that actually come up in a session, built to be read cover to cover or opened mid-week while preparing for a client.

The questions are organised in two layers. Important ones get a full entry: why the question matters, when it tends to be useful, what to listen for in the answer, a gentler version for a client who isn't ready to go there directly, and a caution where timing is genuinely delicate. Beneath these sit question banks, shorter lists of related questions that let a counsellor find several workable options quickly without wading through commentary on every single one.

Chapters move through the main therapeutic approaches: person-centred, psychodynamic, CBT, solution-focused, ACT, existential, narrative, Gestalt, attachment-focused, compassion-focused, emotion-focused and motivational interviewing. Then they move through what clients actually bring into the room, among them anxiety, depression, shame and guilt (kept as separate chapters, since clinically they call for different questions), grief, perfectionism, people-pleasing, identity, relationship patterns and life transitions. A further section deals with moments that resist any modality at all: a client who says "I don't know" and means several different things by it, silence that shouldn't be interrupted, intellectualising, and the sessions where it's the counsellor who feels stuck.

Sensitive areas get their own space rather than being folded into general chapters, including trauma-informed questioning, cultural difference, and the gap between exploring a client's experience and formally assessing risk. There's also a chapter on questions that can cause harm if timed badly, with a more careful alternative alongside each one. Cross-references and three indexes, by subject, by purpose and by modality, keep the whole thing searchable under pressure.
