Paul has been dead since 1978. Now Ruth can hear him through the walls of the house where he died.
She has lived at Bellweather for most of her life, keeping its familiar routines and her brother's photograph close. The voice offers something she has wanted for decades. It also threatens the account of his death that everyone has learned to accept.
With Elias's help, Ruth follows a damaged recording into old photographs, a neighbour's diary and the building's neglected records. Each ordinary detail makes it harder to leave the past where she put it. The roots preserve sounds, but a familiar voice cannot tell her which fragments belong together, or what has been left out.
While the house grows less safe, Ruth must decide what she is willing to tell the people who still call it home. Hearing Paul again is one temptation. Letting his voice speak for her is another.
