Der Wehrmachtgeneral Walther von Seydlitz-Kurzbach geriet Anfang 1943 in Stalingrad in russische Kriegsgefangenschaft. Dort engagierte er sich im Bund Deutscher Offiziere und im Nationalkomitee "Freies Deutschland". Er stellte sich damit gegen Hitlers Kriegspolitik. Für die Nationalsozialisten ein Landesverräter wirkte diese Stigmatisierung in der Bundesrepublik weiter. In der DDR zählte Seydlitz hingegen zu den "antifaschistischen Kräften". Die Rezeption des General Seydlitz ist beispielhaft für die unterschiedliche Rezeption der Geschichte der Wehrmacht und des Widerstands im "Dritten Reich" nach 1945 in beiden deutschen Staaten. Julia Warth geht anhand der Biographie des Generals verschiedenen Fragen nach: Wie verhielt er sich vor seiner Opposition im Vernichtungskrieg? Was bewog ihn zum Widerstand gegen Hitler? Und wie entstanden so unterschiedliche Bilder von seiner Rolle in der NS-Zeit?
