She was thirteen years old when a twenty-year-old man closed the door behind her.

Veronica was born into a small house in Anniston, Alabama - nine people, one bathroom, a mother who prayed and a father who drank. She wore the same dress to school four days a week and got laughed at for it. She learned early that attention felt like love, and she spent the next decade paying for the difference.

By fifteen she was a mother. By twenty-one she had five children by five different men. In between came motels and mugshots. A gun pressed to her temple that refused to fire. A husband sentenced to life for murder. A box of rat poison split between two people who couldn't bear to be apart. A hit-and-run on a dark Alabama road that left her spine looking, in her doctor's words, like a broken stick.

She should not have survived any of it. She survived all of it.

And every time she ran, something ran after her - a voice at a pep rally telling her not to go in, a hand that hid her in the bushes when the car came back around, a mother on her knees who would not stop calling her daughter's name before God.

Then came October 27, 2009. A phone call. A hospital corridor. A twelve-year-old boy. And a promise made at a graveside that she has never stopped keeping.

It names the men, the drugs, the jail cells, the beatings, and the nights she traded her body for rent money - and then it names the God who kept showing up anyway.
