Lécrivain était le plus ancien pilote de cette ligne qu'il avait ouverte officiellement le 1ᵉʳ juin 1925.Casablanca et ses boîtes de nuit, Agadir et son quartier réservé, le fort Juby et le pénitencier militaire, Villa Cisneros et sa garnison espagnole sont les différentes étapes de ce raid. Pendant son voyage et aux escales, Kessel apprend à connaître les pionniers de l'aviation civile parmi lesquels comptaient Mermoz et Saint-Exupéry. Audacieux, simples et modestes, envoûtés par le désert, ces hommes considéraient le transport du courrier comme une religion. Chaque semaine, ils accomplissaient un tour de force pour apporter les sacs à bon port, au péril de leur vie.
