Talollisen poika Konsta Palomaa ilmoittautuu Tuisku-hevosineen Mäntyharjun suojeluskunnan kuormastomieheksi, mutta joutuukin vaarallisille partiointiretkille ja ankariin taisteluihin yleten ryhmänjohtajaksi.Vierumäen kylän verisen taistelun jälkeen Konsta pääsee vihdoin Tuiskun ohjaksiin, mutta pakenevat punapäälliköt pakottavat hänet kyytimiehekseen ja sota muuttuu Konstan henkilökohtaiseksi selviytymistaisteluksi, jossa ihmisluonnon raakuus esiintyy kaikessa järjettömyydessään. Osittain tositapahtumiin perustuva kertomus noudattelee tapahtumien ja paikkojen kuvausten osalta (Mäntyharju, Mouhu, Sysmä, Asikkala, Heinola, Lahti) mahdollisimman tarkasti historilähteitten tietoja, samoin rintamatehtävissä mukana olleiden, myöhemmin valtakunnallisesti tunnetuksi tulleiden henkilöiden osalta (Urho Kekkonen, Kustaa Tapola, Hans Kalm).
