Somewhere in northern Nigeria, a newborn baby is placed beneath the same blanket as a hyena, while the animal, tense and alert, is believed to hold the power to bless the child with strength and good fortune, thousands of miles away, a young man must run barefoot across the backs of moving cattle to prove that he is ready to become an adult, while in another community men cover their bodies with ash, women sharpen their teeth in the name of beauty, families dance with the remains of their ancestors, and mourners reopen ancient tombs to dress the dead in new clothes and introduce them to children born since their last visit.

The world may seem completely explored, photographed, and mapped, yet beyond the familiar routes there are still communities whose customs challenge almost everything we believe we know about life, death, faith, beauty, courage, family, and belonging.

Tribes, Rites and Sects is a narrative journey across Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Americas, and Europe, exploring some of the most fascinating, mysterious, dangerous, and controversial peoples, ceremonies, beliefs, and closed communities still found around the world, from ancient initiation rites and unusual funerary traditions to isolated tribes, secretive religions, charismatic cults, painful tests of endurance, extraordinary courtship rituals, and spiritual practices that have survived for hundreds or even thousands of years.

These pages enter the forests of Papua New Guinea, the deserts of Africa, the islands of the Pacific, the mountains of Asia, the depths of the Amazon, and the forgotten corners of Europe, encountering communities that build their homes high among the trees, warriors who once shrank the heads of their enemies, men who dive from wooden towers with vines tied around their ankles, women who enter the sea without oxygen well into old age, people who speak languages unrelated to any other on Earth, and religions that worship extraterrestrial creators, accept no converts, recognize unusual saints, or gather around leaders who promise salvation while gradually taking control of every part of their followers' lives.

Some of these traditions are beautiful expressions of identity and resistance, others involve blood, pain, danger, fear, sacrifice, or practices that remain deeply difficult to understand from the outside, yet this book does not present every unfamiliar culture as a spectacle, nor does it confuse ancestral traditions with destructive sects, instead, it seeks to explain the meaning behind each custom, the historical forces that shaped it, and the reasons why people continue to defend, transform, or abandon it.

Alongside the wonder are darker realities that cannot be treated as cultural curiosities, including forced marriage, female genital mutilation, violence against people with albinism, persecution through accusations of witchcraft, the abuse of widows, attacks on environmental defenders, gender-based violence, and the manipulation practiced by groups that isolate their members from family, medicine, and the outside world.

The book also examines how sects and cults are formed, how charismatic leaders turn faith into obedience, why intelligent and apparently free people surrender their judgment to a group, and how the promise of a perfect community can become a system of surveillance, fear, punishment, and control, from the progressive dream that ended in the horror of Jonestown to movements that claimed to have cloned human beings, religions built around public figures, and modern organizations that hide coercion behind the language of spirituality, healing, or personal transformation.
