Jahrhunderts durch krasse soziale Unterschiede geprägt, lange bevor das Konzept der Apartheid erfunden und institutionalisiert wurde. Darauf nimmt der Titel des Buches "Aparte Weine" Bezug. Er soll mit seiner Doppelbedeutung auf die historischen Disparitäten, Abhängigkeits- und Ausbeutungsverhältnisse verweisen, zugleich aber auch die bisherigen Errungenschaften der sozialen Transformation in der Post-Apartheid Ära ansprechen. Diese sozialen Veränderungen sind zweifellos mit dafür verantwortlich, dass südafrikanische Weine auf den internationalen Märkten immer attraktiver und erfolgreicher werden. Befreit von dem ethischen Stigma der "aparten" (getrennten) gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung und dem Wegfall der Handelsschranken erhält das Wort "apart" zunehmend den im Weinbau gebräuchlichen Sinn eines angenehm schmeckenden Erzeugnisses.
