Middle-aged Alan Little finds himself trapped in the bookmaking business which he inherited from his legendry successful father. Unlike his father he has no special aptitude for the business and relies heavily on his father's former assistant old Herbert. Herbert's attitude towards Alan is one of disappointment with more than a little disdain as he regularly rescues the business from financial adversity. Although Alan loves his wife and two young children, he cannot help but fantasize over the aloof but stunningly beautiful Alice Teqar who has been the object of his fictitious daydreams since their schooldays. A particularly unprofessional but sympathetic action on his part results in him being given, in lieu of a debt, a strange looking contraption which the old lady claims to be a time machine. Nonsense of course. but if it did work what golden opportunities there are! All that is required is a trip back into the past and place wagers in races in which he already knows the result. Of course, the machine just has be tried, doesn't it? To his amazement the machine does actually work. But! And isn't there always a but? Everything turns out to be far more complicated than he could have possibly imagined, and he finds himself in all kinds of trouble in this inventive and amusing time-travel fantasy.
