After an intimate encounter with death in 2022, James McGrath is back among us with his latest collection of poems titled Tide Pools. Each poem feels invoked from a hidden pool that James ripples with his pen, gently awakening a spring of questions for us and the ancestors to ponder. "Where do we go / when we have been there / and returned /with barnacles on our backs / and a spring gushing / from our eyes?" he asks in "How to Walk Home Without Falling." And, in "Predestination," he wonders, "Where was I before I was here?" I read again and again and follow the scents and images and unanswerables he evokes. Finally, I take his advice from "When You Arrive," "leave your shoes at the edge of the path: / walk into the morning glories, / open your eyes to the butterfly wings / painting the zinnias orange." His poetry brings us back from the edge of not knowing, trusting our next breath.
