Introductory essays by Connor, Dover and Hornblower evaluate the move in the latter half of the twentieth century towards a more critical approach to Thucydides as a source, and a greater focus on the literary context of Thucydides' text. Three closing chapters look at the reception of Thucydides and his influence on later political and philosophical thought.
