Why do readers who will never stand in Konark or Kashgar still read about those places with pleasure? Why has a form so old and so widely practised been treated for so long as a minor relative of the novel and the poem? The Written Road: Genre, History and Evolution of Travel Writing traces how journeys became literature, from ancient voyages to digital blogs. It offers a clear route through a large and sometimes confusing field. The book begins with definitions and debates, showing why travel writing is a chameleon among genres, balancing the traveller's promise of fact with the craft of fiction. It then follows the journey as metaphor, from Homer and Dante to Bunyan and Swift, before travelling through the ancient and medieval worlds of Pausanias, Ibn Battuta, Marco Polo and the Chinese travel record writers. From the Renaissance collections of Hakluyt to the Grand Tour, the interwar heyday and the late twentieth-century surge, it charts how travel writing shifted from information to experience. Along the way, the book asks how to read travel accounts as both windows and mirrors, revealing the societies they describe and the assumptions of those who describe them. It gives space to traditions that general surveys often leave at the margins: Indian travel writing, including a focused study of Odia journeys within and around Odisha, the literature of pilgrimage across Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu traditions, and the rise of online travel narrative in the age of blogs and social media. Written for the teacher and the student, the armchair wanderer and the seasoned backpacker, the pilgrim and the curious reader, The Written Road is accessible, carefully cited and richly illustrated. It shows why people have always set out and written home, and why, whatever the format, honest experience shaped into story remains at the heart of the genre.
