For thirty years, Mark and his closest friend shared tea, easy conversation, and the kind of friendship that doesn't need much upkeep. Then Mark begins describing a recurring dream from his childhood - a cracked concrete lot, an abandoned building, and a song playing over a scene that seems to belong to another world. He mentions it almost in passing, the way anyone mentions an odd dream. Neither of them expects it to matter.

Session by session, over the same tea at the same table, the dreams deepen into something else entirely: a coastal city on a dying planet, a language that arrives instead of being invented, and a name - Makélu - that Mark recognizes before he understands why. What began as a strange recurring image becomes something he can no longer dismiss as imagination. He comes to believe he is recovering memories of another life, lived long ago on Mars, and that the recovery is only the beginning of something larger waking up in him.

His friend listens, questions, doubts - and slowly finds his own certainties about what a life is, and how many a person might have lived, coming apart alongside Mark's. Watching someone else remember starts to feel like remembering something himself.

Then Mark is gone. What he leaves behind is a letter, written in a language only he could read, addressed to a people who no longer exist anywhere but in memory. Translating it becomes the final turn in the narrator's own awakening - not just to what Mark found, but to what it means for him.

The Remembrance is a literary novelette about friendship, spiritual awakening, and the possibility that who we are was never confined to one life, or one world.

A literary novelette, approximately 8,500 words (54 pages).
