"嗟乎,大丈夫当如此也!"
"Ah, a great man should be like this!"
- Liu Bang, upon seeing the First Emperor's procession

He was a peasant who became emperor-the first commoner in Chinese history to claim the Mandate of Heaven.

He had no military genius, no strategic brilliance, and no aristocratic blood-yet he defeated the greatest general of his age and built a dynasty that lasted four centuries.

This is the extraordinary story of Liu Bang, Emperor Gaozu of Han-the man who rose from nothing and built China's greatest dynasty.

From "Good-for-Nothing" to Emperor

Born in 256 BCE to a peasant family, Liu Bang-called a "无赖" (good-for-nothing) by his own father-seemed destined for obscurity. He didn't like to read or work. He drank, socialized, and wandered.

But he possessed something no education or noble birth could guarantee: the ability to attract, inspire, and lead extraordinary people. He was "仁而爱人,意豁如也" (benevolent and magnanimous), "好谋能听" (good at planning and listening), and "知人善任" (knew people well and used them well).

When he saw the First Emperor's procession, he didn't bow in fear. He looked up and said: "大丈夫当如此也" (A great man should be like this).

He would get his wish.

The Dynasty That Gave China Its Name

The Han Dynasty (202 BCE - 220 CE) gave China its name. The majority ethnic group calls itself "Han" (汉人). The written language is "Han characters" (汉字). The culture is "Han culture" (汉文化).

As historian Arnold J. Toynbee observed, the two most influential political figures in human history were Julius Caesar, who built Rome, and Liu Bang, who built the Han civilization.

Liu Bang didn't just found a dynasty. He founded a civilization.
