A final performance. An unreadable paper. A public record that still cannot close the case.

The Note and the File is an evidence-aware true crime and narrative nonfiction account of the unresolved killing of Rosalino "Chalino" Sánchez Félix, the regional Mexican singer whose voice, corridos, and death became inseparable from legend.

Rather than treating rumor as proof, this book follows the surviving record: Chalino's early life in Sinaloa, migration to the United States, the cassette-driven audience that formed around his songs, the January 1992 gunfire at Plaza Los Arcos in Coachella, and the four-month path that led back to Culiacán. It separates the California case, where courts produced a defendant and convictions, from the later Sinaloa homicide, where no publicly confirmed person has been charged.

At the center is the famous paper handed to Chalino during his final performance. The footage has been replayed for decades, but the public record has not authenticated the text of the note, established who wrote it, or proved what Chalino understood when he read it. This book treats that moment with restraint, following what can be seen while refusing to invent what the evidence cannot show.

The investigation also examines File 133/92/AP, the reported Sinaloa case record that has been identified in public reporting but not made fully available for public examination. Between an object that can be seen but not read and a file that can be named but not opened, the book asks how public certainty grows when official answers remain incomplete.

The narrative moves through public records, court findings, reported accounts, missing documents, disputed theories, and the cultural afterlife of a murder that has often been retold with more confidence than the evidence can support. It does not promise a hidden solution or ask speculation to stand in for proof. It asks what can be responsibly established, where the record ends, and why that boundary matters.

This is also a book about music, migration, memory, and the cost of turning a person into a theory. Chalino's songs carried stories of work, reputation, violence, grief, and survival through Mexican and Mexican American communities long before his final night became a cultural image. The book keeps attention on that life while also restoring the separate human weight of the Coachella shooting, including the death of Rene Carranza and the survivors often pushed behind the legend.

Written in a careful investigative style, The Note and the File is for readers interested in true crime cold cases, Mexican music history, corrido culture, public-record investigations, and unresolved cases where the most responsible answer may be the hardest one: the evidence does not yet go as far as the story.
