It follows the fear that moved through Sacramento-area neighborhoods, the widening map across California, the evidence that remained when the attacks stopped, the DNA links that connected cases before they could name a suspect, and the investigative genetic genealogy that generated the lead preceding Joseph James DeAngelo's arrest in 2018.

The book is not a perpetrator myth or a forensic triumph story. Its center is the people harmed, the families and survivors who waited, the investigators and institutions that preserved evidence, and the legal process that finally produced admissions and sentence. It also asks what justice means when the answer arrives decades late through a technology that can implicate relatives who were never suspects.
