He came for the songs. Something older came for him.

Tristan is a wandering minstrel - charming, quick-witted, and carefully unremarkable. He earns his keep playing taverns in market towns, trading jokes with innkeepers, and disappearing before anyone learns his surname. He has reasons for this. He has been keeping them to himself since he was sixteen years old.

When Tristan falls in with three unlikely companions - Elara, a watchful ex-soldier with a rapier she hasn't worn long enough to dull; Vesper, a young scholar chasing a mystery written in a dead language; and Silas, a man whose forgettable face is almost certainly not an accident - he finds himself drawn into a commission far older and stranger than any of them understand. They are searching for a carved stone, an artifact of the vanished a people so mysterious that most scholars have forgotten to wonder what happened to them.

What begins as a contract job winds through stone circles that hum with something that can't be wind, through taverns where the wrong people are watching from the wrong angles, through a network of competing interests whose attention all seems to converge on the same object. And beneath all of it, a question Tristan has been carrying since childhood: what is the song that has lived in him, incomplete, since the night he first heard it in his mother's voice?

The Minstrel's Shadow is the opening book of the Dark Bard series - a fantasy built around music, memory, and the quiet magic of things the world has chosen to forget. It is a road story and a mystery and a gathering of companions, told with a light touch and an eye for the small human moments that happen in taverns between adventures. Tristan is not a warrior, and not entirely certain what he is. But he is very good at reading a room, and he suspects the room, on this occasion, is much larger than he first understood.

For readers who love character-driven fantasy with a literary sensibility, dry wit, and a plot that rewards close attention - and for anyone who has ever felt that the old songs might be trying to say something, if only someone would stop to listen.
