What if the question you have been afraid to ask is the door, and not the exit?

You know the one. You asked it out loud once, years ago, and the room went quiet in a way you have never forgotten. So you put it somewhere lower down, and you kept coming, and you never said it again.

Eleven hundred years ago, in a village on the eastern edge of Samarkand, a boy asked that same question in a mosque and was told to be grateful and stop. He spent the rest of his life proving he had been right to ask. His name was Abu Mansur al-Maturidi. He held no office, served no ruler, and wrote twelve books, of which ten are lost and one survived in a single copy in a foreign library for a thousand years. The creed he built is held today by hundreds of millions of Muslims from Bosnia to Bengal, most of whom have never heard of him.

The Mind Is a Mercy tells that life as a story rather than a syllabus: the city of a thousand competing gods he grew up in, the teacher who rode north to the frontier and did not come back, the long arguments with dualists and rationalists and men who gave God a body, and the single conviction he defended against every authority of his age. This is narrative history, written for readers rather than specialists.

  • Recognise the question you stopped asking, and see why it was never a betrayal
  • Understand how a faith you inherited becomes a faith you actually hold
  • Find language for a grief that has a question inside it
  • See why no one has the standing to write off the person you love
  • Meet a mind that refused both blind obedience and easy doubt, and would not let either side claim him

This is a book for anyone who has been told that their questions are a weakness, and has gone on asking anyway.

He was buried in a cemetery that a machine flattened in 1947, and the thing he built is standing in a third of the world.
