Restoration architect Clara Ellison inherits a storm-battered estate on the Maine coast from a relative she never knew existed. She comes to sell it. She stays because the house is impossible: hallways that lengthen at night, portraits whose faces slowly disappear, thousands of names carved beneath the wallpaper. One of them is hers.
