Im Elternhaus wohnt er auf engstem Raum mit seiner Familie und seiner jüdischen Frau zusammen. Das junge Paar haust in einer winzigen, ungeheizten Dachstube. Rapp beginnt dort zu schreiben. Rapp fühlt sich in der Gegenwart fremd, durch die Geschichte entwurzelt. In kleinbürgerlicher Umgebung, bedrängt von familiären Schwierigkeiten, in einer Zeit, die materielle Entsagung bedeutet, verteidigt er erfolgreich den Egoismus des Literaten und zieht sich völlig auf sein Inneres zurück, auf sein Schreiben, das sein eigentliches Leben wird.
