What can we learn from suffering? To suffer is to be unable to rid us of ourselves. Suffering is a way of adhering to ourselves in which being open to the world and other people becomes impossible, since our flesh suffers from thoughts of imminent death. Having to suffer means having to co-exist with this distress. Yet even in this very renunciation, suffering also attests to an unbreakable bond, a belonging to an elemental community, a primal proximity to the emotion of suffering, in which this requirement and obligation are as much a part of us as our skin.
