Angeregt von Béla Bartóks Violinsonaten plante Ravel 1922 eine eigene Sonate für Violine und Klavier, kam jedoch zunächst nicht über Skizzen hinaus. Nach mehreren Unterbrechungen wurde das Werk erst 1927 fertig gestellt und der befreundeten Geigerin Hélčne Jourdan-Morhange gewidmet. Im Hinblick auf die sparsame, ausgedünnte Satzstruktur und die Besetzung behauptete Ravel später pointiert, die Sonate beweise die klangliche Unvereinbarkeit von Violine und Klavier. Einen Stammplatz im Violinrepertoire hat sie sich dennoch erobert - nicht zuletzt wegen ihres von Jazzelementen inspirierten Mittelsatzes "Blues". Die Fingersätze dieser Henle-Urtextedition besorgten zwei Meister an ihrem jeweiligen Instrument: Christian Tetzlaff und Pascal Rogé.
