What if losing almost everything was the beginning of finding what you were actually looking for?

Mara Ellison wasn't searching for God.

She wasn't searching for a spiritual community. She certainly wasn't planning to move back to Jackson, Michigan.

But within a matter of weeks, her relationship ends, her job disappears, and the grandmother who had always been a quiet anchor in her life dies.

Then Mara learns that Grandma Ruth left her a house.

With little keeping her in Chicago, Mara returns to the Michigan town she left behind years ago. She tells herself it's temporary. Sort the house. Figure out what comes next. Move forward again.

Then, walking through downtown Jackson one Friday afternoon, she hears someone singing.

Drums. Hand cymbals. Voices beneath the trees.

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna...

Following the sound leads Mara to a gathering in Horace Blackman Park-and eventually to the doors of an old 1920 church called The Bhakti House.

She intends only to observe.

Instead, she begins returning.

There is Friday night kirtan. Prasadam shared around crowded tables. Early-morning walks with japa beads. Bhagavad-gita discussions that leave her with more questions than answers. Kitchens filled with cumin and cardamom. Service nobody notices. Laughter where she expected solemnity.

And Noah.

A young devotee who seems to understand the difference between giving Mara space and letting her disappear.

As weeks become months, Mara begins discovering bhakti not as an abstract religious idea, but as something lived: chanting, serving, questioning, cooking, grieving, loving, surrendering-and slowly learning that a meaningful life may have less to do with arranging everything around herself and more to do with discovering what she can offer.

But there is something Mara doesn't know.

Something involving her grandmother.

Something that suggests Ruth may have known far more about the path Mara would eventually take than Mara ever imagined.

And on an ordinary Friday night, someone walks through the door of The Bhakti House carrying something that has been waiting for Mara for years.

Maybe Mara didn't find The Bhakti House by accident.

And perhaps you didn't find this book by accident either.

The door is open.
