Today is my fifteenth birthday, and I'm now taller than Lee; my muscles are bigger, and I believe I'm stronger. I've decided it's time for him to die.
After more than two years of planning, I know I can take him if it becomes a fight. I have every detail thought out. Tonight, will be fitting; he will die on the same day my mother died and on the day I was born.
We never celebrate my birthday because of my mother, but we never celebrate anything. When Lee comes in from the fields, I have plates on the table and dinner on the stove.
"What's this?" the old man grumbles.
"Dinner," I reply. "I cooked us some fried chicken and cream corn."
It wasn't the first time I'd cooked chicken and corn, but the occasions were rare.
He fussed around, put his shoes up, returns to the table, and sits down. I serve him his last meal. As he eats, I can't help but think to myself, you'll never have to see this asshole again. And I smile.
"Whatcha smiling at, boy?" he says.
"Nothing, Dad." We eat in silence.
When he went to bed, I set my plan in motion.
