Claim at 62 and the reduction is permanent. Wait until 70 and the increase is permanent too, and so is the survivor benefit it leaves behind. This book is what to gather, decide and understand before you file, whether you are the worker weighing 62 against 70, the spouse whose own record is smaller, the widow, the divorced person who does not know they qualify, or the adult child helping a parent through it.
A preparation guide for the decisions Social Security requires, not a walkthrough of website screens and not a promise about your own check. It explains how the benefit is computed from 35 years of indexed earnings, what full retirement age anchors, and what every month of claiming early or late does to the amount. Written in plain English for an adult who has never had to think about this before.
Appendix A is one checklist for each situation: a single worker approaching 62, a couple with two records, a couple with one, a divorced person, a widow or widower, and someone already claiming who wants to change it. Appendix B is the month you apply, the day itself, and the notices that follow. Every item carries a box and a pointer back to its section.
The Social Security Administration announces the 2027 amounts, and the cost-of-living adjustment that sets them, in October 2026, after this edition went to press. Rather than guess, this book prints the 2026 figures, labelled as 2026, so that you know the scale of each one, and it names the fact sheet on SSA.gov where the 2027 figures appear. The rules, which do not move with the year, are stated in full.
It does not tell you when to claim. No book can: the answer depends on your health, your savings, your work and the people who depend on you, and this one is written to put those facts in your hands. It states no estimate of your benefit as fact, and it points you to the free, neutral help that exists at 1-800-772-1213 and SSA.gov. It is not affiliated with the Social Security Administration or the U.S. government.
Set in larger, clearer type. The text face was chosen for how big it reads on the page, about a fifth larger than a typical guide of this size. Not a large-print edition, but nobody should have to fight the page while working out a date they cannot take back.
This is the 2027 edition, current to September 2026 and rewritten each year rather than patched. Scroll up and start before the month you cannot take back.
