Als Marlis Brink im Mai 1949 nach Stukenbrock kommt, um dort eine Stelle als Hausmädchen anzutreten, ist sie einundzwanzig Jahre alt. Geboren in Tolkemit, einer kleinen Stadt im ehemaligen Westpreußen, gehört sie zu den wenigen Überlebenden, die aus einem russischen Internierungslager im Ural zurückgekehrt sind. Dass Stukenbrock ihre geliebte neue Heimat werden wird, ahnt sie noch nicht.§65 Jahre später ist Marlis Brink der Bitte ihres Nachbarn Helmut Kohaupt nachgekommen und hat ihm aus ihrem Leben erzählt. Aus den sich anfangs eher zufällig ergebenden Gesprächen wurden bald feste Sitzungen, in denen ein Aufnahmegerät mitlief. So entstand dieses Buch. Es erzählt vom Alltag einfacher Menschen in der Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeit und ist einer der letzten Zeitzeugenberichte.
