This is a novel about a London publisher who moves to Wales to test the depths of his roots there. In a seaside university town he seeks the advice of a number of characters: the scholar who has dedicated himself to his work at the expense of other aspects of his life; the wife who has herself sacrificed a great deal in becoming his companion; the professor who is now a public intellectual; the actress who is his wife; and the artist whose works are to be seen in the houses of the town.
