Following up Frewin's remarkable London Blues set the author (who was also assistant film director to Stanley Kubrick for over 20 years) a daunting task. Within a couple of chapters, he proves that he's pulled off the same magic: plotting that is both delirious and utterly plausible; a sleazy, fetid atmosphere (here, a fading seaside town); and wonderfully unpredictable characters. When leading crime figure Sidney Blattner hears that his innocent brother has been executed in Margate, he sets out to track down the killers. Two of his aides are murdered, and Vince, Sid's star performer, is sent down to open a very nasty can of worms. Perhaps the bare bones of the plot are warmed-over, but it's the skill with which Frewin handles his narrative that is so intoxicating. London Blues fans need not hesitate. (Kirkus UK)
