Rolf Dieter Brinkmann hatte sich 1971 aus dem öffentlichen Leben zurückgezogen und arbeitete bis zum Erscheinen seines Gedichtbandes "Westwärts 1 & 2" an dem Projekt eines Romans, in dem er Hintergrund und Aufbruch seiner Generation darstellen wollte. Hierzu legte er umfangreiche Materialhefte, Mappen und Textsammlungen an, in denen er einzelne thematische Schnittpunkte erarbeitete. Ab 1972 legte Brinkmann eine Material-Sammlung für seinen Band "Schnitte" an. , der als eigenständiger Roman veröffentlicht werden sollte. Der vorliegende Band wurde nach dem Original in faksimile produziert.
