Savate: History of a French Fighting Art
A brief but focused history of France's unique system of foot-fighting - with rare historical reprints included

Savate: History of a French Fighting Art offers a concise, fact-based look at the origins, development, and evolution of Savate - the striking art born in the streets of 18th- and 19th-century France. Tracing its journey from Marseille and Paris brawling traditions to its codification by figures like Michel Casseux, Charles Lecour, and the Charlemont family, this book provides a clear overview of how Savate moved from street defense to structured sport.

Alongside the main historical narrative, the book also features a selection of rare, fully reprinted newspaper articles and archival materials, giving readers firsthand insight into how Savate was perceived and practiced during its formative decades. These primary sources-some translated into English for the first time-help paint a fuller picture of the art's cultural context.

Whether you're a martial arts enthusiast, a student of European combat history, or simply curious about one of the world's most refined striking systems, this book serves as a direct and reliable entry point into the story of French boxing.
