Seule la nécessité d’approfondir ces deux questions permet de comprendre l’unité de cette oeuvre protéiforme qui s’étend de l’existentialisme au marxisme, de l’essai philosophique à la biographie d’écrivain. Dans chacun de ses textes, il s’agit pour lui de penser ce qu’il y a d’universel dans chaque homme et d’utiliser l’écriture pour aider à l’avènement d’une communauté des singularités. L’engagement ne concerne pas seulement les intellectuels mais tout individu qui prend conscience de la présence d’autrui et de sa place dans l’histoire. Ce que Sartre a choisi en tant qu’individu c’est d’identifier son existence à une réflexion sur l’existence.
