Root Force

Root Force: Attack of the Gall Makers is an exciting, scientifically grounded educational comic book that introduces readers to the fascinating world of plant-parasitic nematodes and their impact on agriculture. Combining colorful illustrations, engaging characters, and real nematological science, the book transforms the microscopic struggle beneath our feet into an entertaining adventure.

The story begins at Green Valley Farm, where a young farmer named Maya discovers mysterious swellings on tomato roots. With the help of Dr. JDE, a knowledgeable nematologist, she uncovers an underground invasion led by Queen Gall, a formidable root-knot nematode determined to establish her empire by stealing nutrients from plants.

Using futuristic shrinking technology, Maya and Dr. JDE journey into the soil, encountering beneficial nematodes, microscopic predators, and other organisms that influence soil health. Along the way, readers discover how root-knot nematodes penetrate roots, establish specialized feeding sites, reproduce, and cause significant crop damage.

As Queen Gall's forces multiply, the heroes assemble the Root Force, a team of biological allies and agricultural defenders. Together, they demonstrate practical approaches to nematode management, including accurate identification, sanitation, crop rotation, resistant plant varieties, biological control, soil health improvement, and population monitoring.

The adventure also introduces other important plant-parasitic nematodes, including cyst, lesion, dagger, and ring nematodes, while emphasizing that most nematodes are beneficial participants in healthy ecosystems.

Beyond its entertaining storyline, the book encourages scientific curiosity, environmental stewardship, and appreciation for the essential role of nematology in sustainable agriculture.

Designed for students, educators, growers, and curious readers, Root Force: Attack of the Gall Makers delivers an important message: protecting crops requires understanding the invisible organisms living beneath the soil. Through scientific knowledge, teamwork, and integrated pest management, even the smallest agricultural enemies can be managed, helping ensure healthier soils, stronger plants, and more productive harvests for future generations.
