This book chronicles the life of Richard II, King of England, who ascended to the throne as a teenager, inheriting the crown from his grandfather. Yet England at the time was beset by internal strife and external threats. His uncles-John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and Thomas, Duke of Gloucester-were both ambitious men who used their positions as regents to dominate and suppress the young king. Upon reaching adulthood, Richard exacted his revenge on them-and in doing so, revealed a growing streak of ruthlessness that would come to define his reign. Nor did he show mercy to the common people: he imposed the poll tax three times, driving the impoverished masses to open rebellion. In the end, Richard II was captured by his own cousin, Henry, and met his death in captivity.
