Durch seinen frühen selbstgewählten dramatischen Tod wurden viele Werke zerstört und es gibt kaum persönliche Hinterlassenschaften des Künstlers. Das entstandene Desiderat wird durch den aktuellen Band zum Gesamtwerk geschlossen. In seinen Sujets - dem Porträt, dem Akt und der Landschaft - gelang es Gerstl, seinen Stil von einer Salonmalerei zu lösen und die Farbe immer pastoser und freier aufzutragen und so Werke zu schaffen, die zu den modernsten Werken seiner Zeit gezählt werden können.
