The Weimar Republic holds an infamous place in German history as a unique period of shame. Having been defeated in World War I, the German people had harsh and demoralizing conditions imposed on them by the Allies, including severe limitations on their nation's military. Vindictive neighbors like France and Poland ruthlessly exploited Germany's weakness by encroaching and laying claim to yet more of its lands.

In this situation of the "death of Germany's honor," as Kurt Eggers calls it, paramilitary units called the Freikorps emerged to fill the void, refusing to accept their nation's humiliation.
