Böhlau greift vor diesem Hintergrund das erwachende Selbstvertrauen der Frau und die damit einhergehende Bedrohung des männlichen Führungsanspruches auf. Exemplarisch führt sie die daraus resultierenden Verständigungsschwierigkeiten zwischen Mann und Frau an der tragischen Beziehung eines Künstlerpaares vor Augen: Die Malerin Olly kämpft gegen das klassische Frauenideal einer dem Mann dienlichen Ehefrau und Mutter an; Gastelmeier, ebenfalls Maler, doch mit traditionellem Kunstverständnis, kann in seiner Sehnsucht nach einem konservativen Familienleben nur vordergründiges Verständnis aufbringen.
